Yankee Stadium's Last Hoorah.

Tonight was the last night Yankee Stadium is to host a New York Yankee's baseball game. For 85 years Yankee Stadium was home to many of the most historic and storied moments in sports. As far as baseball is concerned this is huge, but tonight's closing means so much more than just a stadium where a lot of players played during their careers or where championships were won. Yankee Stadium is where memories for thousands if not millions of men, women, and children were made. These memories would be passed on from one person to another with some becoming legend or myth. It is interesting to see or read about the emotions a stadium can evoke and is a perfect example of how sports can leave its realm of wins, losses, and statistics and effect those who have played on the field and sat in the seats. This is when something as inorganic as a concrete and metal stadium can become organic by way of our memories and stories.

As an avid Yankee fan, this was an even that I was not going to miss. It was truly incredible how so many people came together to celebrate the cathedral that is Yankee Stadium. Players from all generations were present in an emotional display of reverence to a ballpark that has defined so much of what we call great baseball. Prior to the game, I heard one sports announcer comment that when they were first told that they were coming to broadcast the closing day ceremonies he was somewhat nonchalant because closing a stadium had never been this big of a deal. He changed his opinion. This was Yankee Stadium. Not a day goes by that history is not made. Derek Jeter's speech at the end of the game is going on file with many of the other emotional events of the evening and the ballpark's history. It was great for the fans to be included in the momentous occasion and for their unwavering devotion to be recognized. The majestic quality that surrounds the Yankee organization definitely comes from many different outlets. It could not have been a more perfect evening as the Yankees beat the Orioles 7-3. It was an event that captured the magic of baseball.
