Thierry Henry from the France national team handled the ball in the box allowing his team to get a game winning goal over the Republic of Ireland. The final score was 2-1 and this game determined the acceptance of France into the 2010 World Cup with the Republic of Ireland coming up short. The referee missed the call and needless to say the Republic of Ireland was in a bad mood. After FIFA determined that a replay was not on the table, the Republic of Ireland asked to be the 33rd team in the World Cup. This was also turned down. The real issue of this, involving sports in general, is the media. If the handball was not caught so easily on camera then there would have been no argument. The media plays a key role in high performance sports. We have almost every possible camera angle imaginable in most sports allowing us to have instant replays that can effect sports during and after the fact.

While the Referees missed a crucial call in a crucial game i don't think there is any way that a game like that can be replayed. Thierry Henry in my opinion is well past his prime and this incident hurt his image. Not only did he celebrate after the goal but he avoided any kind of statement till FIFA said the game would not be replayed. Henry wasn't the only one to handle the situation poorly, FIFA should have never made Ireland's request to be the 33rd nation in the world cup public. It seems like in all sports we are limiting the referees judgment and turning to replay, i would like to see soccer stay without video replay.

As much as I would like to keep instant replay out of professional soccer, all the media and cameras cannot be ignored. In this day media plays a huge role in sports and that is not going to let up anytime soon. The only chance soccer has to help stop instances like this occur is to embrace the technology the media has brought to sports. Although instant replay may affect the flow of the game it will keep it fair. If instant replay is not used in soccer or many other sports for this matter, more situations like this one may occur, which in turn will jeopardize the integrity of a referee. When a referee misses a call and it is captured by a television camera it is almost guaranteed that people and the opposing team are going to see it played back on Sports Center about twenty times. To say, “Sorry the referees just missed that call,” is not going to cut it anymore. One can see this is a perfect example, when a major call is missed that is going to effect the outcome of a game it needs to be changed. Instant replay is only going to enforce fairness in sports. One can only hope this may even make athletes play by the rules because now there is less chance to get away with dirty plays.
