KIN 332I Kauer Final Blog

Think back over their semester in this course. Considering what you have and haven't learned, how you have and haven't grown and changed in your thinking about the topics of the course, what has been disappointing, what has been enlivening-and present those reflections to the class, and also on this blog. The format is wide open-except that no traditional essays or written responses are allowed." You can post an image and reflect upon it. You may do a brief video. Write prose or poetry.

This class has opened up my mind to new ideas and ways of thinking regarding sports and society. I have developed ways of thinking more critically and looking at topics with a deeper meaning and understanding of sports. I realize that for all individuals in society sports have different values and meanings. After taking this class, I understand how to apply different theories to define sports, the organizations that governor them, and the athletes themselves. My personal opinions on sports is not the final answer and their are multiple perspectives among society that define sports. Throughout the course, I heard many opinions on different topics some I agreed with others I did not but I do respect that we all have different angles of looking at things and our life experiences are not all the same so therefore we have formed our on bias and opinions on things. We as a society need to be more open-minded to differences and more accepting to individuals with opinions different than our own. This course has enlightened me and bought out in me a deeper understanding of sports in society and helped me to develop ways to look at sports from a critical stand put and forced me to step outside of my own box in my ways of thinking.

Imagine a world without vision,
How would life be,
Would there be discrimination,
Discrimination against you or me

What if we could only hear,
Hear the sounds of voices,
Would we considered people dear,
Or would we make the same choices

Stuck in a mental frame of mind,
Knowledge is vital,
For we have limited time,
Today we begin our revival

KIN 332I has taught me to look at social issues not only from 2 or 3 different view points, but from many view points.

Many different topics stood out to me and were definitely eye openers during the course of this semester. One thing that stood out to me in the beginning of the semester was steroid use in athletes. I find it hard to believe the lengths that some athletes will go through to be competitive in sports. I can’t help but think when will it ever stop? Performance athletes keep raising the bar and make it more competitive for others.

"I'm a UCLA Prostitute. I sell my body to them. they pay me to peform for them. When my teammates and I perform well, the school makes lots of money...money the school makes, we get the same, just our scholarship."(Coakley. J pg 489)

One of the big debates we discussed in class was that whether or not college athletes should get paid. Many of us have different opinions, but I think they shouldn't get paid their scholarship is more than enough, even if their career ends with a major injury.

Throughout the semester I was able to gain knowledge about the many issues revolving around sports I was not aware of.

From the very start till the end
I realized that a functionalist is what I am
This is the view I use to defend
The sports in my life for my final exam

Now that I have been taught the many ways
I can now see what sports really do
Behind the gray haze
Welcome to my mind’s breakthrough

There are the everyday media
Sending out messages and the big shot names
But we just like to watch the deviant drama
And parents who go to the little league games to go insane

Do not forget the overly rich and the exclusive
And those following the dominate male ideology
These people are very sportive
And change will make them very angry

In spite of this all, I learned this does not have to be
Because sooner or later someone with this in mind
Will realize sports need to be inclusively friendly
Once this has been done watch the great social change unwind

The simple child-like fun in sports will rise again
That is until then.

From this class, I have learned to look at sports from different perspectives and how it plays into our lives. I see how sports can be positive and yet negative in a way. Now I have a balance between the two. This course has changed me in that I cannot view sports in the same way again.

You walk in the door
And drop your butt to the floor,
Open your ears and open your mind
So many new possibilities you’ll find.
She says, “So they say ignorance is bliss…?”
But you soon learn ignorance is not your wish.
