New Movie: Invictus
Invictus is a new movie coming out directed by Clint Eastwood and I think it is a perfect example of how sports can change society. The movie is based on a true story about how Nelson Mandela, the president of South Africa, used their national rugby team as a way to bridge the segregation gap between the black population and the white population. In the movie rugby was a white, male dominate sport so therefore it was loved by whites and hated by blacks. Mandela, played by Morgan Freeman, was aware of this fact. With the Rugby World Cup coming up he believed by getting blacks and whites to support the nations team it would help unite them as one. The only problem was the rugby team needed to start winning to make it to the world cup. So Mandela teams up with the rugby captain, played by Matt Damon, and instills the notion of change in his mind help motivate him to start winning. Of course in the end this “feel good” movie it is safe to assume the rugby team wins and country is united. But on a serious note this movie looks very good and again is a true testimony to how sports can lead to social change. GO SEE IT!!

ive seen some posters for this movie on bus stops but i hadn't thought much about it. this definately sounds like a movie i'd like to see! thanks for the post!
I think more movies like Invictus should be made. Sports are a definite way to change the way society thinks, and the hidden racism that still exists in our every day lives. These types of movies are inspirational and at the end it helps instill a change of heart on subjects that go without talking about or even an eye opener to the injustice that goes on daily. Just because it does not happen in your neighborhood it should not go overlooked and knowing that problems like racism mentioned in Invictus still goes throughout the world. Sports are unique because they can put feelings that society instills in people’s heads and change them. I think that when watching movies like this one, people realizes that they can be doing more to change society. Many people are unaware of the way they talk and they slang they use, which among friends could be considered funny, but all we are allowing is racism and offending other nationalities. If we watch and change the way we carry us, our morals, and the language we use, we will help our future generation eradicate and prevent further racism.
