Four officials of the Mongolia team were expelled from the world boxing championships Thursday for trying to bribe a referee with a watch. The Mongolian boxers, their coaches and team doctor were allowed to stay in Milan until the tournament ends. The International Amateur Boxing Association said on its Web site, code of ethics states any gifts offered to a referee must be authorized. Gifts can be exchanged "only as a mark of respect or friendship" but must have a nominal value. More than 550 boxers from 133 countries are participating in the world championships. If these laws were not put into place then there would be no control as to what the outcome of matches would be. Rules have to be enforced, with no rules the athletes are competing for no reason. There will always be people trying to rig games in one way or another; it’s up to officials to stop this from happening.

I agree that rules need to be enforced by officials or else tournaments will stand for nothing. This is unfortunate for the Mongolia team because now they are going to be looked down upon in the boxing world and their fans. Trying to bribe a referee to rig the fight would be considered deviant underconformity which “consists of subnormal ideas, traits, and actions that indicate a rejection of norms or ignorance about their existence” (Coakley, 2009, pg. 159). Usually in society, deviant underconformity is looked down upon because it goes against society’s norms as opposed to deviant overconformity where extraordinary actions are deviant in a positive way to society. Coaches usually like athletes who are deviant in an overconformity sense because it goes with their sport ethic. I would even root for the deviant overconformity team over a deviant underconformity team despite the word deviant in the terms. To end, go Manny Pacquiao for the March 13th Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. Fight!

Its sad that anyone would consider bribing officials in the effort to increase their odds of winning, especially with a watch. What value can a victory have if you didnt win it by talent alone? People are so desperate to win that they forget things called honor and pride. Its equally depressing that they have rules prohibiting such trasactions because that just stipulates that people will be tempted to cheat.
