sexism in professional female atheletes

Even prior to taking this class I wondered, why is it that women can't just be considered great atheltes why do they have to carry on the role of a sex symbol as well? Why do women such as Maria Sharapova or Danica Patrick only get recognition for being hot as opposed to being hot along with being extrodinarily good at what they originally get paid to do which is play tennis or race cars!!! Granted I'm not attempting to take away there hotness these two along with many other women who just so happen to be professional atheletes are very attractive but, is that all there is? I would like to propose that it is not! Danica Patrick was the first woman to win an Indy Car race. Yes, she beat out hundreds if not thousands of men and in her sport in particular is a massive feat. Maria Sharapova is a three time grand slam singles champion and she won her first grand slam at the age of seventeen. For any athelete, female or male, this is an amazing feat. Now why aren't we talking about that as opposed to saying Maria Sharapova man she's hot!!! I would have thought that as a society who has finally elected an African American president and sent a man to the moon that we have come so far but I fear that we have so much further to travel when it comes to growing in tolerance towards the advancement and equality of treatment that all women, regardless of race and culture, deserve. The fact that women still make .70-.80 to every dollar a man makes just means that we all need to work a lot harder to make this happen and the mentality starts amongst all of us. I personally want to make this happen. How about you?

I definately agree. But I also think that you are picking out specific people. There are women athletes out there that aren't so "hot"... that people only look at for their athleticism. For example, Venus and Serena. They are beautiful women in my opinion, but not one of the typical "hot" athletes and a lot of people know them for their athleticism. I think that sexism only plays a role in certain athletes. For instance, David Beckham is not only a great soccer player but he is now looked as a sex symbol also. I think sexism in professional female athletes is in the eye of the beholder. And although we have come a long way with accepting women in sports, we still have a long journey as far as the pay for professional women in any job category, not only in sports. BUT i do think that the respect for women atheletes has very much improved.- T.Vo; KIN 332I sec. 02

I find it interesting, as well. There are woemn who are recognized for their aesthetics more so than their performance, as well. Anna Kournikova has taken that vernacular to the poker world, as Ace and King are also called "Anna Kournikova." The name is dubious, since the taglike states "Anna Kournikova looks good, but never wins."
