As many of you already know college football is coming to an end. With that comes the announcement of bowl games. Personally this has to be my favorite time of the year, for almost the whole month of December through the first couple of weeks of January there is football games almost everyday. All the games are good but "bowl season" is normally highlighted by the BCS games, in which the top teams in the nation square off. As usual the nations premier schools are always present: Florida St, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Oregon and so on. However some people are scratching their heads this year when an AQ, automatic qualifier, Northern Illinois snuck into one of the BCS games. As an avid sportscenter fan, I noticed many people were outraged by the news. Many thought NIU had no business in a BCS game. Many people want to see the nation’s top teams battling it out, not NIU get embarrassed by their opponent Florida State. But wait a minute... wasn’t the BCS developed to give every school an opportunity to play in these BCS games? The BCS has been very controversial since it first started, and has continued to be till this day. The participants receive millions of dollars as a reward and the players are provided with a once in a life time experience. However, I feel that many executives aren’t interested in the little guys making it to the big game, they want the games that are going to get the most people watching and make the most money, furthering the gap between the nation’s top programs and all the others.

This is one of the most exciting time periods for college football, since all the nations top teams are put into a bowl games, to see which team comes out on top. During the bowl game periods, college football is on for the first week of January for pretty all day every day. You are also correct, that same powerhouse teams are always in the bowl games and every once in a while a small school gets into a bowl game. The BCS system will never allow a small school football program play in the five top bowl games, which are: Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and the BCS Championship. The BCS committee says that the reason they are allowed is based on their strength of their game schedule, since top football schools play other top schools more often then small football programs, then they are allowed to play in the five biggest bowl games. In reality the BCS system is bias in arranging the bowl games, since they only want to see top ranked teams playing since it will draw bigger audiences and more money into the BCS. The NCAA seems to be a great way for athletes to enjoy playing sports while in college on scholarship, so that they can just focus on school and athletics. What is not seen is that the NCAA is actually a monopoly that gains money off of athletes that it doesn’t have to pay and at times throws an athlete or a program under the bus in order to draw attention from them.
