David Stern Fines the Spurs 250k

Heres a link to the article http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--david-stern-stumbles-again-in-his-failed-culture-war-against-the-spurs-194828970.html

For those who may or may not know David Stern has been involved in a lot of questionable calls throughout his years in the NBA. David Stern decides to fine the San Antonio Spurs franchise for sitting out their three most popular starters. Theres obviously two sides to this argument and I do understand that the fans paid and come to the games to see these guys play. Many might argue that Stern is looking out for the NBA and trying to appeal to the fanbase who watch the games just for these particular players. On the other hand though, if you look at this through a interactionist perspective,(yes im going there) you can easily see how much sitting out these older players benefits the team. Generally coaches sit their players out towards the end of the season going into the playoff. They want their older guys to get rest before the upcoming playoffs. What coach pop has done is no different but he's simply doing it early on in the season. He has Tony parker whos 29, Tim Duncan 36 and Manu Ginobli at age 35, along with kawhi but he was injured so that doesn't count. These players are aging and coach pop is trying to preserve their legs from a heavy road trip schedule that they were on. They had six road games across the United States and didn't have much time for rest. Coach pop saw this game versus the defending Champs the Miami heat as a time to let his key players take a break. Regardless of what team it was and when it was, he was going to sit his players and I do not believe Stern should have a say so it what a coach does with HIS players. Stern reminds me of a dictator sometimes on how he calls things, I believe a 250k fine is way excessive for a day of missed games. It makes me wonder about what he will say next about teams who purposely tank the season to get high spots in the following years drafts or lets talk about how he somehow manage to get his team, The hornets the number draft pick over the Bobcats who had the worst season in NBA history. My apologies if this came off as a rant, it's just amazing to see how ridiculous some of these fines are.

This was definitely an interesting article. I had heard about the 250k fine they were going to give Popovich and I definitely disagree with David Sterns on this one. It’s just like you said in your blog, this is coach Popovich’s team and Stern should have nothing to do with how “Pop” handles his business. If the coach feels as though he needs top rest his players then so be it. I also like what you said about Stern being similar to a dictator, because realistically that’s what it seems like. Stern makes these irrational decisions constantly and it’s not fair to the coaches and teams. I respect Stern for being the commissioner of the NBA, but to fine a team for sitting their star players to rest up after a long road trip seems absurd. This isn’t the first time coach Popovich has sat his players for rest, yet this is his first time getting fined for it. I believe that David Stern needs to easy up and let the coaches do what they think is best for their own teams.

I heard about this dilemma too, I feel its just a scapegoat excuse to get some money circulating. Its a call that was definitely not needed and cant even be justified with proper reason. A coach is in charge at how the team flows and plays, you pay the coach to make these call and entrust in their decisions. Sure its a bust to not see the players you want to see play, but you should be a fan of the team as a whole. Stern just found the quickest way to stop anymore bickering from upset fans.
